Useful Information
Island life is special and brings with it some unique challenges - here are some ways you can help
Sand Dunes - Please help! The dunes are our first line of defence against sea level rises and now, more than ever, we need to preserve them. Please only use the very obvious, well trodden, wide footpaths, avoid the little paths. Don't let children play in them and never leave or store anything in the dunes.
Beach cleans - are brilliant but they only work if what is collected is popped in a bin. Never leave beach rubbish above the beach, on pathways or in the dunes - thank you. |
Rubbish - Where practical, the best thing is to take your rubbish away with you. If you use a bin please follow any separation advice carefully.
Fresh water and sewage - Please conserve water whenever possible and flush loo paper only, never wet wipes or sanitary products. |
Dogs
We want you and your dog to enjoy your time on St Martin's. We also want to protect pet poultry, farm animals and precious wildlife habitats, as well as ensure everyone can enjoy the island, whether or not they have a dog.
Here are some things you, as a responsible dog owner, can do...
1. Keep them close
Please keep your dog on a lead whilst on the road and tracks. This prevents your dog from wandering into people's homes and gardens, injuring pet poultry and disturbing farm animals and ground-nesting birds. If cattle approach you when walking through fields, it's best to let your dog off the lead, and call them back when it's safe to do so.
2. Pick up the poo
Please always clear up after your dog. If you can't find a bin nearby, take the poo bags home with you.
3. Look for signs
Keep an eye on local signs and notices wherever you're walking. Some poultry keepers have put up signs to alert you to the fact that dogs need to be placed on a lead. There also may be signs on some beaches during the bird nesting season to protect chicks such as plovers.
4. Stay on the ball
Remember that not everyone loves dogs, and some people all really afraid of them. So make sure your dog doesn't run up to other people, especially children. Equally, not all dogs are happy to be greeted by unknown dogs!
